Parent AUP

An AUP, or Acceptable Use Policy, is a great way to set expectations and build accountability with your student.  It is our job to teach our children how to be kind, courteous, responsible, and accountable.  Creating a list of rules and consequences provides a tangible way for students to do just that.

I am encouraging you to write up an AUP for your home to mimic the one displayed in our classroom. I feel that by displaying the house rules, your student will be more receptive to the rules and consequences of your home.

I have included a template that you can use to create an AUP of your own. Feel free to change it up, color it up, and shape it up to be a fun and practical way of connecting to your student.

Here are a few tips for writing your household AUP:

Create your rules together. This will help your student feel like they are more independent and in turn, they will be more likely to hold themselves accountable for their actions.

Make the boundaries clear.  The rules should be specific.

Follow through.  Enforce the written rules and consequences.

Have fun! Do not only focus on the negatives.  Twist your AUP into an actions and rewards policy such as finishing homework quickly and efficiently is rewarded with five minutes of extra TV time.

Remember, this is specific to your household. Make rules that work for your family.
