Diversity
Why is Diversity in the classroom important?
I grew up in a podunk town in Middle of No Where, Arkansas where there was a very obvious lack of diversity. Almost every person I knew at school was a white Christian student from a middle class family. I, myself, was a white Christian student from a middle class family. The people around me were very culturally insensitive and close-minded to the fact that not everyone is the same. I grew up with very little education about race, gender identity, ability, sexual orientation, or religion. It was by my own curiosity that I learned about all these things, became culturally sensitive, and gained respect for others opinions and lifestyles. What makes the world so beautiful is that we are all different -- what a boring place it would be if all humans were the same. The real world is so beautifully mixed with races and beliefs; why would we do our children the dishonor of hiding that from them? Diversity in the classroom is something that I treasure and welcome with open arms! Children need to be exposed to the way the world works so that they understand differences and welcome them rather than being afraid of them or hating them. I sincerely hope you will click the links above and learn about diversity and why it is so important in the classroom!
