Service Learning
Vanderbilt University says service learning is "a form of
experiential education where learning occurs through a cycle of
action and reflection as students seek to achieve real objectives
for the community and deeper understanding and skills for
themselves." Wikipedia says it is "An educational approach that
combines learning objectives with community service in order to
provide a pragmatic, progressive learning experience while meeting
societal needs."
Both are absolutely right. Service learning is using a community
need to educate our sutdents. In the world in which we live, our
communities are in dire need of any help they can get. Why not allow
our students to be that help? This allows them to learn about things
such as the economy, vegetation, skill and labor, communication,
problem solving, teamwork, social justice/injustice, perseverance,
mentorship and an multitude of other life skills that will not only
benefit them in their school lives but in their adult lives as well.
