Copyright and Fair Use Policies

Information From the AUP Document:

  1. Do not copy anyone’s work. It is considered cheating AND plagiarism and is a crime.

  2. Do not take any information off of the internet without giving credit to the person who put it there. This is considered plagiarism and is also a crime.

  3. Do not use anything that is copyrighted, unless you get permission from the person who created it.

  4. Just because it does not say it is copyrighted, does not mean it is not copyrighted.

  5. Fair Use Policy: There are things you can and cannot use.

  6. If you are unsure if you can use something off of a website or other source, please ask the teacher.

My Thoughts on Copyright/Fair Use:

My students will be expected to check who owns anything that they use in the classroom for any projects and give credit to that person(s). They will ask permission to use the copyrighted work if necessary. According to Cornell Law School, copyright is the exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, sell, or distribute something. In other words, when something such as a video, song, image, or document is copyrighted a person who did not create it cannot use it without giving credit to the original author.  If the user does not give credit to the original author, it is in violation of the Copyright Law. However, there are a few exclusions to this. This is called the Fair Use policy. A person can sometimes use something that is copyrighted for nonprofit educational purposes, news reporting, criticizing or commenting, or parody. In order to be able to do this, a person that is not the original author may only use a small amount of the work, must create new meaning for the work in order to make it original, must rework/use it in a completely different way than the author intended, and absolutely have to use it for nonprofit purposes.
