Online Safety

Being safe while being online is so important. There are so many people in the world who want to take advantage of you and steal your information from the internet. Online safety is about taking precautions to ensure that you and your private information stay safe.

How to Stay Safe:

When online, a good tip to stay safe is to stay as anonymous as possible. Don’t give people information about yourself like your name, where you live, your phone number, what school you go to, or even the names of your family members. Any information like this, as trivial as it sounds, can help lead a predator right to your door. Also, keep online friendships ONLINE! Never agree to meet in person with someone from the internet that you have never met before. Another good tip is to always use a made up username when playing a game or on a website that has you create a screen name. This way, people will not know your real name.

Warning Signs:

On the flip side of this, because programs allow us to create screen names, this means that we can never be sure who we are talking to on the internet. If something is making you uncomfortable, or someone will not leave you alone when you are on the internet, tell a parent. If someone you do not know wants to make plans to meet you in person, you should also tell a parent, this is a major red flag. Another warning sign is if a website asks you for personal information, this is probably not a good site to be on. Most companies will not ask for this information.
