Equitable Grading
Equitable grading is the idea that students should be assessed in fair and
equal ways, with no room for implicit bias. Regardless of grading scales,
students should be successful in their learning. In my classroom, I vow to
always practice equitable grading. I will not grade based on subjective
topics such as “effort,” because that allows implicit bias to play a role in
my grading scale. We should all try to acknowledge and eradicate our
implicit biases, but until then, educators need to reevaluate how they are
grading and who exactly is being impacted by certain assessment practices
that have been put in place. As teachers, we have the duty to treat our
students with compassion and grace. Browse these articles that explain
