American Diabetes Association

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood sugar is too high. There are 2 types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2.

Type 1 occurs because your body does not produce insulin, and it can occur in anyone, at any age. It also occurs in people of every race, shape, and size.

Type 2 occurs only if your body doesn't use insulin correctly. Some with type 2 can control their blood sugar by eating healthy and exercising, but others need medication or insuline to help out.

Although there is not a cure for diabetes, children can still live a normal childhood if their disorder is controlled. As a parent, working with your child through their disorder is imperative. As they grow older, they will gain independence, and will begin to take responsibility for their diabetes.
