Copyright and Fair Use

Copyright is defined as the legal right granted to an author, composer, playwright, or publisher to exclusive distribution, publication, production, and sale of literacy, music, dramatics, or artistic works.

Fair use is defined as a brief exerpts of copyright material that can be quoted verbatim for reporting, teaching, and research purposes without having to pay the copyright holder.

Basically, by using copyright material without permission, there is a chance of penalty.  This almost ties into the copyright holder viewing the use of their material as plagiarism.  Materials that fall under fair use are free to use in the classroom as long as the teacher does not claim the work as their own and references the original author.  Below are a couple of websites with more information, we will discuss it more while reviewing the AUP.
