What is an AUP and why is it necessary?

An Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) is nothing more than an agreement stating what is okay and what is not when it comes to technology.  With an AUP, rules regarding how to use technology and the Internet correctly and safetly are set in stone from the beginning, with no questions asked.  It is somewhat like a contract or a signed agreement between two parties.  I have AUPs for my classes, but AUPs are not just for classrooms or businesses.  They can also be used at home!

Having an AUP at home can be a family bonding experience.  You can gather around and create the AUP together and get everyone on the same page, and then everyone can agree on the rules in unity.  It can save you a lot of frustration.  :)

Below you will find a template for your own at-home AUP, as well as some examples of consequences.

Home Template

Examples of consequences:

1. Verbal warnings

2. Loss of tech privileges for rest of day

3. Loss of tech privileges for one full day

4. Something silly, like a silly dance or performance

5. Grounding from a toy or place

As you can see, there are mixtures of warnings and consequences you can use to design your own AUP!
