Recommended Children's Literature

As an educator, I strongly believe that children should read books as often as possible. Literature enhances their vocabulary and builds strong critical thinking skills.  Statistics shows that daily reading has lifelong benefits. Throughout this school year, I will give assignments to students where they are required to read for at least 5-10 minutes a day to an adult, parent, or guardian. The parent will be required to sign a sheet that proves that their student has read. Reading to yourself is great, but reading aloud is even better and produces mature readers and great fluency skills. The books below are some of my second grade favorites. I recommend them to all of my students, and some will even be available for use in our class library.

In my classroom, students will also be given several opportunities to create their own books to enhance their writing skills. Books can be uniquely made using many tools such as Microsoft Powerpoint. An example of that is seen here a long with a game made from Microsoft Powerpoint.
