Copyright and Fair Use
Copyright laws protect the hard work of others
on the Internet. Using information that has been copyrighted is
illegal. It is also seen as a lack of academic integrity because
it is unfair to take credit for someone else’s work or use it
without permission. As an educator, it is extremely important
for me to teach my students to check for these laws when
researching information online.
Not everything used from the internet is considered plagiarism,
however. The term ‘fair
use’ allows some information to be used by schools,
educators, and students for academic purposes. From things such
as scholarly journals to websites, students have great access to
important information.
